The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of
emergencies by mobilizing the *power of volunteers* and the generosity of donors.

In that vein, the Code4Good Project is a first-of-its-kind volunteer workforce that gives software engineers and engineering leaders an opportunity to support the Red Cross Mission by contributing their talents to the development of Redcross.org and Redcrossblood.org platforms.

These valuable platforms represent a gateway for accomplishing several key goals of the Red Cross:

    * Publish life-saving information about the Red Cross, our mission, how we help, how to prepare for natural and unplanned disasters, and more
    * Solicit financial donations from supportive individuals who generously fund our Mission
    * Allow blood donors an easy way to schedule a blood donation appointment
    * Recruit volunteers who are responsible for delivering 90% of our disaster relief hours
    * Allow professionals and interested individuals to enroll in training and certification courses that help deal with daily emergencies in local communities

This included working collaboratively across groups to develop strategic vision, set key success factors, identify viable future-state options, organize competitive bidding process, select key vendors and technologies, develop multi-year budgets and implementation plan, and drive successful completion of transition to a new model for constituent acquisition, experience management across web, mobile, and messaging, and transaction processing in support of our Mission.

  • Agile transformation for Redcross.org and Redcrossblood.org

Engaging a broad range of stakeholders across the organization, I championed, planned, initiated and executed a cultural, organizational and process transformation of the product delivery model for American Red Cross' flagship marketing properties: Redcross.org and Redcrossblood.org. Numerous transformational successes in that process include:

Engaging a broad range of stakeholders across the organization, I championed, planned, initiated and executed a cultural, organizational and process transformation of the product delivery model for American Red Cross' flagship marketing properties: Redcross.org and Redcrossblood.org. Numerous transformational successes in that process include:

    * Fully transitioned SDLC from outsourced waterfall process to in-house Run & Maintain model using Agile/Scrum, thereby reducing release cycle ~60% from 8 weeks to 3 weeks.

    * Transforming staffing model from 85% outsourced to 25% outsourced, reducing cost by ~$1m annually through improved efficiency and quality.

    * Engaging business stakeholders deeply in the Product Owner role, thereby improving collaboration and prioritization on/of projects, initiatives and features

    * Growing IT staff 6x by recruiting, training, certifying and developing talent to achieve new, certified skills using self-paced training milestones and external training partners.

Research and planning for this agile transformation began approximately June 2013. In January 2014, we we held an organizational summit of four internal customer stakeholder groups to kickoff our new agile delivery method, which began with our first sprint a few weeks later. As of December 2017, we continue to see increasing benefits of this agile transformation across all stakeholder groups for Redcross.org and Redcrossblood.org.
